The proper cleaning and maintenance of your air filter is crucial. A dirty air filter is the leading cause of poor airflow.
Keep return air vents free of dust and obstructions.
At home you should clean your air ducts once every 2-4 years. Some homes do require more frequent cleaning.
Dryer vents in your home should be cleaned at least once every two years. Some homes require even much more frequent cleaning than that.
These simple procedures will go a long way towards keeping your family healthier, safer and comfortable, and in some cases can significantly reduce energy costs.
For a gauranteed, quality job, whether this is for your home or your business, call City Duct Cleaning Inc. We have been cleaning all types of air duct systems for decades, and although every home is unique in its own way, there is not any type of system that we have not cleaned before.
What a Summer
HOT!!! Yeah no kidding. Here in Toronto it has been exceptionally hot this summer…but are we complaining? No Way!!
But is your air conditioner complaining? Maybe. Whenever you operate the air duct system for heating or cooling, the bottom of the Air Conditioning coil has a greater chance of clogging with dirt.
This can often cause your coil to freeze up and will definitely reduce your air flow down to almost nothing. Give us a call and we might be able to help you over the phone, and if not, then one of our friendly technicians will be happy to stop by and help with your cooling needs.
Here is a useful video that explains some ways of how to stay cool during our extremely hot summers.

Duct Cleaning Safety At Work: Part 1
Just for fun, let’s take a look at these photos about Safety At Work…
This series of photos have absolutely nothing to do with us or the way we do our work. In fact, we have an excellent work safety record which is due to several factors such as staff training and a company Health and Safety Policy. Safety to everyone concerned always comes first.
Its still fun to laugh about how some other trades people do their work. You may notice that there is no “duct cleaning technician” photo in here.

Attic Insulation Removal In Progress
Besides cleaning air duct systems and furnaces, City Duct also specializes in removing attic insulation. There are many reasons why someone would want to have their attic insulation removed, and those reasons include contamination by animals or rodents, the homeowner has just found out that they’re allergic to it, or in this case the homeowner was planning to renovate their attic space.
I’m not sure if this insulation was blown in as good as it could have been, to us it didn’t really matter because we were there to remove it anyway.
There is alot to know about attic insulation, much more than you’d think. And its one of the most important energy saving investments that you can make.
After we remove someone’s insulation we usually recommend the Best Toronto Insulation Contractor, a company called Matrix Insulation. I know for a fact that their finished product looks much better than it does in this picture, and they are extremely knowledgeable about what they do. We like working with the best people in their fields and the guys from Matrix can give you a real education about your attic insulation if and when you need it.
If you’re looking for air duct cleaning, furnace cleaning or even attic insulation removal, give City Duct Cleaning a call today! We’re the best in Toronto at what we do, and you already know about all our awards, right?
Daylight Saving Time
Don’t forget, Daylight Saving Time ends once again this weekend. The clocks are set to fall back one hour overnight Sunday. The time change begins at 2 a.m. local time in the Toronto Area. Fire officials are also reminding people to change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
Now would also be a good time to change the batteries in your programmable thermostat as well.
If the fall is the time of year that you normally have air duct cleaning done in your home, then take a look at our current specials and a duct cleaning coupon that is available.
Air Duct System Repairs
Here are some examples of why it makes good sense to keep your air duct systems in good repair. The photos below show some of the recent dryer exhaust ducts that we have cleaned, but the principle applies to any air duct system whether it is for an exhaust system or for heating or cooling in a home or a business.
The first set of photos shows a broken 90 degree elbow that was found by our inspection camera or duct cam. The duct being photographed in this case is in a retirement home. We measured it out and broke a hole in the ceiling, and the dryer lint that fell out of the hole onto the floor was enough to fill five green garbage bags. You wouldn’t believe how much lint there was above that ceiling.
Duct cleaning is obviously our company’s main business, but I’ve been in the HVAC industry for almost 30 years as well, and have installed hundreds of new furnaces, central air conditioners, electronic air cleaners, HEPA systems, humidifiers and even complete duct systems. So doing minor duct repairs such as this one was not difficult for us to manage at all.
I’ve been finding out from my customers over the years that it was quite hard for them to find a heating company who is even interested in doing duct repairs of any kind, and several people have told me that. Most of the companies that they called before they found us said they basically do new installations only.
The same applies to dryer exhaust ducts as well. If you need your’s to be replaced, re-routed or to have a brand new one installed from scatch, or if you need new outside vents with bird screening installed, give us a call. We are here to serve you. Providing excellent service for reasonable costs and winning loyal customers is what we do best.
The second set of photos shows the state of a dryer exhaust duct that we found. The duct system was previously cleaned by another duct cleaning contractor and this is the way they closed the access hole… with duct tape only!
Duct tape is good for many things, but it is definitely not meant to act as a permanent fix in this situation. The hole had very rough edges, so they obviously didn’t even know how to use their sheet metal snips. All that was required to make this one right was to remove all the tape, trim the metal to make it flat, and then to simply screw a metal plate on it. It took me longer to go downstairs to my truck and come back with a metal plate than it did to fix the ductwork.
My best advice when looking for a duct cleaner to do any job, whether it is in your home or in a business or commercial establishment is not to assume that all duct cleaning companies are equally knowledgeable or reputable.
It amazes me sometimes how people can get away with doing such shoddy work. In this case, the duct went for 16 feet, had two turns seperated by 12 feet of duct, and then there was a stack 90 where the duct went into a riser. And from there it went up six floors to a fan on the roof… and there was not a single access hole anywhere else to be found. So how did they clean this duct system? There absolutely has to be access into the duct system at the bottom of the riser. Always. Anyway, we fixed everything up and made this one work like new again.
Getting back to duct repairs, from patching holes to adding a new vent to re-routing or moving duct runs or even your main ducts, at City Duct we do it all, residential or commercial. Call us if you need any of these things done. We’d be glad to help.
Candles Are Pretty But Also Deadly
Did you know that it only takes seconds for a flickering flame to engulf your home? In past years, the popularity of candles has increased greatly and so has the number of house fires.
|People leaving a candle burning on a table do not realize the potential damage awaiting them. Fires will spread quickly and the heat, smoke, gases, soot and toxic fumes could be deadly.Your home’s furnace ventilation system, when running, acts like a vacuum and can draw in all the smoke from a candle and spread it throughout your home in a matter of minutes creating a sooty mess you can’t imagine.|
So in the future, please remember that even though candles are romantic and pretty…they can also be deadly.
How does this relate to an air duct cleaning blog? We’ve been doing fire restoration for over two decades now, and have been to literally hundreds of house fires that have been caused by burning candles… or at least by candles that people thought were extinguished but weren’t. What we do, the air duct cleaning and deodorizing of the HVAC system, is a small part of the complete fire restoration service.
Removing Blown-In Attic Insulation
There are several reasons why someone would want to have the insulation in their attic removed. The most common reasons are due to renovations, the homeowner finding out they are allergic to the existing material, or after rodents (usually squirrels or racoons) have found a way into the attic space.
Besides air duct cleaning and a host of related home heating services, City Duct also does attic insulation removal, and we have been providing this service since our inception in 1987.
Here are some photos of a recent attic insulation removal job that we completed recently. This home was undergoing a renovation, and the contractor had us in to remove the attic insulation because they were planning to install 148 potlights in this home.
When it comes to having new insulation re-installed, we recommend that you use a company called Matrix Insulation. We work in conjunction with Matrix, and can often arrange to have them in to reinstall new installation just after we have taken your old stuff out.
Some people really appreciate that same day service, especially when this procedure is done during colder months. Matrix compliments us well, because they do excellent work and are extremely knowledgeable in their field. If you’re wondering if you can qualify for any government rebates, just ask Jim, and he will explain all your options completely.
There is so much you could know about attic insulation, and there are several types of material that you could chose from too. Who’d have thought?
If you have any questions about your attic insulation at all, then these are the guys to call. I personally am still always very impressed every time that I talk to Jim about insulation or ventilation problems in our customer’s attics.
